The experienced Dutchman would be useful addition for Newcastle United.

Rafael Benitez Manager

Rafa Benitez oversaw one of Newcastle’s best transfer deadline days in recent history on Thursday, bringing Miguel Almiron and Antonio Barreca to St James’ Park.

They have the opportunity to make their transfer business even better, however, with the market for free agents still wide open.

An interesting option for them could be Ibrahim Afellay.

The 32-year-old is currently available on a free transfer after his contract with Stoke City was terminated by mutual consent on January 28th, but he still has a lot to offer.

Newcastle are fairly thin on the ground in the wide attacking department, and Afellay could be a really useful addition for Rafa’s side.

The 53-capped Holland international possesses real talent, and has superb technical ability. He also plays with a certain type of directness that would surely help the Magpies improve upon the potency of their play in the final third.

His availability on a free transfer means that bringing him to Tyneside would involve little risk, and Newcastle must surely at least explore the possibility of making a deal happen.

The only word of caution for the Toon would be that Afellay has struggled in the Premier League before, so what’s to say that he would be any better in a Newcastle shirt?

There are, of course, no guarantees with regards to that, but Rafa should take a punt on the Dutchman nevertheless.

And if Afellay lives up to his undoubted potential, he could end up being a really exciting addition for Newcastle.
