The transfer window may be over, but Newcastle United are already thinking about their next steps in the market.

Indeed, as the richest club in the world with Dan Ashworth at the helm, the Magpies are reportedly already eyeing up a few transfers for January and next summer, and one player who is certainly on the radar is Bayer Leverkusen’s Moussa Diaby.

The French winger was touted as one of Newcastle’s top targets this summer, but sadly, he proved unattainable due to the fact he wanted to challenge for top honours with this talented Bayer Leverkusen squad.

Dean Jones summed up Diaby’s position quite well on The Done Deal Show earlier this summer.

“Moussa Diaby was a name that cropped up, but Bayer Leverkusen just don’t want to lose him. Newcastle have been knocking on this door for two months now and it wasn’t a case of money at this point, Leverkusen are so desperate to keep this group together for this season and pretty much the entire team is up for it and they’re going to give it a crack together. I think Diaby is almost ungettable,” Jones said.

Diaby was deemed ungettable this summer due to Leverkusen’s perceived potential to challenge at the top-end of the Bundesliga, but after winning just one of their first seven games, that seems unlikely at this point.

Of course, we’re only in the early knockings of the season, but if Leverkusen don’t go on a winning run soon, Diaby will surely be questioning his future.

With Newcastle reportedly scouting the 23-year-old once again last week, a January move could be on the cards, and after Newcastle had numerous big-money approaches for James Maddison knocked back in the summer, the money is certainly there to spend.

If Leverkusen don’t buck their ideas up, Newcastle could have a genuine chance of signing Diaby in January.
