Newcastle United are now reportedly close to reaching an agreement over a new contract with Bruno Guimaraes, with the Magpies eager to make an announcement soon.

According to journalist Dean Jones, the Toon have been able to shut out reported interest from Real Madrid to sign the midfielder to a new deal, with Guimaraes expected to become Newcastle’s best-paid player should he receive an increase on his £120,000-a-week contract.

Jones said on Newcastle’s talks with Guimaraes over a new contract: “They are trying to tie him to this deal and I expect it to happen. I don’t think he’ll be leaving the club this summer. I think it would take a massive offer to convince Newcastle to sell and to turn his head at this stage of this project.”

Guimaraes joined Newcastle last January and has since gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, with the Brazilian forming a core role in Eddie Howe’s system in what has been a whirlwind few 12 months for the club.

The 25-year-old joined Newcastle when they were in the relegation zone last January and have since been one of the best teams in England, with a European finish in the Premier League looking more and more likely for the Magpies with each passing week.

And Guimaraes’ impact has been key, with the Brazilian a regular under Howe and making the midfield one of the best in the division. And this contract update is huge for Newcastle’s long-term plans, with the summer expected to see the former Ligue 1 star joined by players of his quality.

Newcastle’s success over the last 12 months can easily be pinned down to the business the club made in the January window of 2022, with Guimaraes, alongside Kieran Trippier and Dan Burn, one of the key reasons why the Magpies find themselves where they are now in the division.

Indeed, keeping Guimaraes around will be huge in the Toon’s quest to return to the summit of English football, and the midfielder signing a new contract with Newcastle even amid interest from Madrid is nothing short of incredible, with the northeast project easily one of the most exciting in the sport..
