Newcastle United are believed to be considering a last-gasp move to bring Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady to Tyneside.

That’s according to the Daily Star, who claim that Newcastle are willing to offer Wolves around £25million before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Newcastle are allegedly ‘frantic’ in their attempts to sign new defenders before the transfer window closes, with Coady a top target.

Coady is a noted favourite of Newcastle advisor Frank McParland, who worked with Coady at Liverpool.

Wolves don’t want to sell Coady but are willing to do a deal if Newcastle make an offer that is simply too good to turn down.

£25million may be seen as good money for Coady, who cost Wolves just £2million from Huddersfield Town back in 2015.

Coady switched from playing in holding midfield in his younger days to starring as a Premier League centre back, even heading into the England setup.

Lauded by Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka as a ‘real leader’, Coady is vocal on and off the pitch, possessing the leadership and character Newcastle want.

Coady is a key man at Wolves, and with more than three years left on his contract, an exit in the next 24 hours may not be easy.

Still, Newcastle have money to spend and may now throw it at Wolves in an effort to get a last-gasp deal over the line.

Newcastle do also appear to be signing another experienced Premier League defender in Brighton and Hove Albion ace Dan Burn.

Eddie Howe may now look to partner Coady with Burn in a right-foot and left-foot partnership.

That fee would take Newcastle towards £150million spent his month after deals for Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes and the imminent signing of Burn.

A deal for Coady doesn’t seem likely, but on deadline day you just never know.
