The Magpies skipper was seen arguing with his goalkeeper after Willy Boly’s late equaliser.
Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has spoken out about his reaction to Martin Dubravka conceding late on against Wolverhampton Wanderers, admitting he made a mistake in reacting how he did.
The Magpies headed into the latter stages of Monday night’s Premier League game a goal to the good after Isaac Hayden had opened the scoring on 56 minutes, latching on to Fabian Schar’s pass and wrong-footing goalkeeper Rui Patricio with his low effort.
Although Wolves dominated proceedings in the first half and created numerous chances in the second, they appeared unable to break down the tenacious Newcastle back line, but in the 95th minute, Willy Boly climbed above Dubravka to head in Adama Traore’s lofted cross and secure a 1-1 draw.
Lascelles and Dubravka were spotted arguing on the pitch after the goal but the Newcastle captain, signed by Alan Pardew in the summer of 2014 (Sky Sports), has gone on to admit he was wrong to blame the Slovakian.
“On the pitch there and then, I was just angry with everything,” Lascelles told Sky Sports News. “It wasn’t necessarily to do with him, it was just to do with everything. They scored at that minute but when I looked back at it, it was as clear as anything that it was a foul.
“So I apologised to him and I shouldn’t really be doing that to him. I hold my hands up but at the same time I’ve got a job to do. I haven’t got the armband because I’m technically the best or gifted. It’s because I’m honest and I’m hard-working. I won’t change in that aspect.”
Since joining Newcastle from Nottingham Forest, Lascelles has made 127 appearances for the Tyneside outfit, scoring eight goals and claiming three assists, according to Transfermarkt.
