Manchester United want £20m for Luke Shaw and unless Newcastle complete a takeover then they can’t afford to pay it.
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw runs with the ball during the UEFA Champions League Group A football match against CSKA Moscow.
Shaw is believed to earn around £130,000-a-week at Old Trafford and wants a £5m pay off from the Red Devils if he is to depart in the New Year.
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw applauds supporters as he leaves after the UEFA Champions League Group A football match against CSKA Moscow.
Where the 22-year-old will go next remains to be seen, though, as there is a £20m asking price on his head as United look to recoup a sizeable chunk of the £30m they paid to Southampton for the left-back in 2014.
Newcastle United were believed to be interested, but unless a proposed takeover at St James’ Park goes through then the Magpies cannot afford to pay that for one player.
Rafael Benitez, manager of Newcastle United, arrives at the stadium prior to the Premier League match against Leicester City.
The Mirror reports that manager Rafa Benitez wants around £20m to spend in January to improve four different positions – one of which is a left-sided full-back.
Shaw certainly has the quality to succeed at Newcastle, but without owner Mike Ashley selling up then there probably won’t be the funds to sign the England international.
