While Newcastle still need a prolific striker, it is equally important that they spend their money on a player they can rely on every week.
Islam Slimani’s international call-up with Algeria suggested that the forward might finally return to the football pitch this week.
The Newcastle United loan signing has not featured since penning a temporary deal at St James’ Park, last turning out in Leicester City’s colours.
But any hopes of Slimani making an appearance with Algeria were dashed when he was left out of the matchday squad against Tanzania on Thursday.
And with the summer not far away now, Rafa Benitez must start to consider whether he will make Slimani’s move permanent.
Right now, there is simply no decision to make. Newcastle cannot bring in a player who is likely to command a big fee – and yet stuggles to stay fit.
The relegation battle is packed with sides who have depended too heavily on injury-prone forwards – West Ham with Andy Carroll, Southampton with Charlie Austin and West Brom with Daniel Sturridge.
If Newcastle are to avoid another scrap next season, Benitez must bring in a player who can score at a decent rate – but also be able to turn out every week. Slimani does not look like that player.
