Jesus Gamez has flattered to deceive at Newcastle United, but he is currently just one injury away from the first team.

Newcastle United need to move players on as they chase new signings, including a much-needed forward, according to the Shields Gazette.

Rafa Benitez’s striking options are limited ahead of a Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur, with Dwight Gayle sitting out of their last two pre-season friendlies.

The situation is understandably frustrating as a number of fringe men have still not been sold, despite not featuring in first team plans – among them Achraf Lazaar and Massadio Haidara.

Both left-backs have failed to wrestle a first team spot from Paul Dummett, with Jesus Gamez operating as an understudy in recent weeks.

However, according to Fichajes.com, Gamez is a target for Alaves, among other La Liga clubs, in a move that would leave Dummett as Newcastle’s only senior left-sided option in defence.

And to make matters worse, Dummett picked up a knock against Hellas Verona on Sunday and could be seen hobbling off the pitch as Gamez arrived in his place.

Former Malaga captain Gamez may once have been a player that Newcastle fans would be happy to see leave, but, as this reported interest arrives, the club may need to hold onto the defender for a little longer.
