February 2020 feels like another world now.
Eleven months ago you could watch football in the flesh (imagine that) rather than spending evening after evening making do with an eight-bit stream and the company of Steve McManaman.
But the ongoing global health situation has not only forced fans to watch on from home, it has also left an indelible imprint on the transfer market. Revenues have taken an almighty dip and, suddenly, clubs are being forced to accept reduced fees for their star players.
Perhaps that’s why, according to A Bola, Braga would consider bids of about £10 million for Ricardo Horta, their prolific wing wizard.
In January 2020, Newcastle saw an offer of exactly that amount – £10 million – batted away by the Primeira Liga outfit. Braga wanted £25 million at the time for a Portugal international who would end the season with 24 goals to his name (Publica).
“I don’t know why he’s not playing in England,” Braga coach Carlos Carvalhal told The Sun (25 November, pull-out page 8) before comparing Horta to Liverpool’s £40 million summer signing.
“He’s very similar to (Diogo) Jota.”

To answer Carvalhal’s question, it seems it was the sky-high price tag placed by Braga on his head that closed the door to a potential move to England.
But if The Archbishops are willing to sell their 26-year-old miracle-working winger for a knock-down fee of £10 million now, it won’t be long before the offers start rolling in once more.
How Newcastle could do with a fleet-footed attacker capable of changing a game with a moment of magic. As Callum Wilson continues to bang his head against the wall, Horta could be the lockpick Steve Bruce so badly needs.
With nine goals and six assists in 22 games, Horta is falling slightly short of replicating the staggering numbers of his 2019/20 campaign.
But, in this drab, increasingly desperate Newcastle side, Horta’s speed, thrust and creativity would stand out a mile.
