Newcastle sold Moussa Sissoko to Spurs in the summer of 2016.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has told the Chronicle that he remains in contact with Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko – two years after the Frenchman left The Toon.
The 28-year-old left Newcastle on deadline day in the summer of 2016 to move to north London after the Magpies were relegated to the Championship, for a fee of £30million.
Benitez teamed up with the Euro 2016 finalist for a matter of months after taking over earlier in 2016, following the sacking of Steve McClaren before deciding to cash in on the former Toulouse star.
Ahead of Wednesday night’s match-up between Newcastle and Tottenham, in which Sissoko could face his former side, Benitez told media that he and Sissoko still exchange text messages.
“My memories about him are only positive memories. I have exchanged some text messages with him since he left. It is not like we talk every day, but we have spoken from time to time,” Benitez said.
“But obviously I have a good relationship with him because he was a good professional for us.”
Sissoko played 133 times for the Toon after joining the club from Toulouse in 2013, scoring 12 goals and adding another 19 assists in his three years on Tyneside.
He has struggled since his big-money move to Spurs, scoring only twice in 79 appearances but could find that he reignites his Tottenham career in central midfield after playing in the middle under Mauricio Pochettino of late.
Sissoko currently earns a huge £95,000 a week at Spurs, according to the Daily Star, and has three years remaining on his current deal.
