Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came off the bench to help Arsenal to a 2-0 Premier League win against Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United on Monday.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez could hardly hide his jealousy as Unai Emery brought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang off the bench to seal Arsenal’s latest home win on Monday night, as reported by The Sun (2 April, page 55).
Benitez made the trip to North London hoping to win at the Emirates Stadium for the first time but his Newcastle team was swatted aside by an Arsenal outfit who have now won a record-equalling 10 successive home games.
Aaron Ramsey gave The Gunners a first-half lead with a classy finish but it was the introduction of £60 million striker Aubameyang after the interval that gave Arsenal that extra spark of quality, the Gabonese international setting up Alexandre Lacazette for the clinching goal.
And Benitez, whose spending has been restricted under Mike Ashley, has suggested that he would love the luxury of being able to introduce one of the world’s greatest goalscorers.
“When the opposition can bring a £60 million striker like Aubameyang from the bench when the other players are getting a bit tired, that makes a big difference,” said the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss.
Once again, Benitez went on to criticise the relative lack of ambition shown by Newcastle in the transfer market with the club only breaking their transfer record for the first time in 15 years when Miguel Almiron arrived in January.
You have to wonder how much longer Benitez will stay at a club who seem incapable of matching his ambition.
