ESPN report that Bernd Leno is keen to leave Arsenal before the end of the January window, having become frustrated at Mikel Arteta’s decision to overlook him in the Cup competitions. Newcastle are reportedly interested.

Leno, 29, has managed just seven appearances for Arsenal this season, only two of which have come since October. He has now entered the final 18 months of his contract, and 90Min claim Newcastle are keen on a loan deal.

The report, which was published on Thursday, claim that Newcastle have held talks over signing the Germany international on loan. It is unclear if the £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) star would be open to joining the Toon.

Arsenal would also need a replacement. But in a potential boost to Newcastle’s pursuit of Leno, the Gunners goalkeeper now wants to go. ESPN claim he is annoyed that Arteta has overlooked him in recent weeks.

Indeed, Arteta kept Ramsdale between the sticks against Liverpool in both Carabao Cup semi-final matches – after Leno had played in the previous rounds against Leeds, Wimbledon and Sunderland.

Newcastle boost: Could Arsenal man Leno really move to Tyneside?

A goalkeeper was hardly seen as a priority for Newcastle. Martin Dubravka is considered one of Newcastle’s best players – but Leno is probably an improvement, even despite his lack of recent game time.

If Arsenal are to sanction the exit of Leno, then they will need to bring in a replacement. The Gunners are said to be looking at New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner. It would certainly save some wages.
