Jamie O’Hara has claimed that Newcastle are in ‘big trouble’ with Aston Villa set to beat them to the signing of Lucas Digne from Everton, as he told talkSPORT (10/01/22 at 9:55 pm).
The former midfielder thinks Aston Villa are signing ‘proper players’ and that’s something Newcastle aren’t doing, hence why they have a ‘serious problem’.
After seemingly being excluded from Everton’s matchday squad, it seems as though Villa are going to land Digne’s talents, as reported by Sky Sports.
The big money pockets of Newcastle were also keen to add him to their books, but it seems as though the Midlands side have won that race.
Added with the loan arrival of Philippe Coutinho, O’Hara thinks Aston Villa are proving to be serious contenders by possibly adding Digne to their ranks.
“Great signing for Aston Villa,” said O’Hara. “And they are making some really good signings.
“It just shows Newcastle are in big trouble because these are the players that they should be trying to sign.
“But they can’t get them because good players like Lucas Digne will be saying, ‘well, hold on. Newcastle might be great money-wise. But they could go down’.
“And you have got the opportunity to sign for Aston Villa, with Gerrard in charge, who are on the up and signing proper players. Like Coutinho. This is why I think Newcastle have a serious problem.”

From a financial perspective, there’s no doubt that both Villa and Newcastle can go toe-to-toe because they have wealthy owners in their boardrooms.
But Villa are in a much healthy position, they are also aiming for the top and they have Steven Gerrard in charge.
Whilst it may not happen this season, they still have a chance to finish in Europe during this campaign if their new signings really elevate this currently goal-shy Villa team.
As Villa proved at Old Trafford on Monday night, and during their last Premier League game at Brentford, Gerrard’s men are playing some very pretty football, but, at this moment in time, they are lacking that bite in the final third.
