The mystery player who featured for Newcastle United Under-23s on Friday was not the former Tottenham Hotspur trialist Dion McGhee, according to his club.

McGhee, whom Vavel claimed had trained with Tottenham after his Manchester United contract expired in the summer, is reported to have played for Newcastle U23s at Stoke last week.

And the Magpies’ decision not to name one of their starters against Leeds this afternoon may have led some to believe that the 20-year-old was being handed another run-out.

But a tweet from Hebburn United confirmed it was their player, Cedwyn Scott, who was involved at Whitely Park.

What the future holds for McGhee – who was linked to a string of clubs, including West Ham United and Glasgow Rangers before his auditions at Tottenham and Newcastle – remains to be seen.

The 20-year-old signed for Manchester United at the age of six and was rising through the ranks while the Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford.

Scott had a hand in two goals as Newcastle came from 3-0 down to beat Leeds 4-3 and put a dent in the Whites’ excellent start to life as a category one academy.
