Newcastle United and West Ham face more Premier League competition for the signing of Union Berlin star Taiwo Awoniyi, with Southampton now in the race for the striker.

According to Sky Germany, the Saints are interested in landing the 24-year-old attacker should Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side fail to sign Armando Broja on a permanent deal this summer, with the Albanian international set to be a major transfer target for Southampton.

Awoniyi has been nothing short of a sensation in the Bundesliga this season, with the Nigerian international bagging 12 goals for Union as the former Liverpool star has kept the German side in the running for another European finish.

The African attacker only joined Union last summer, yet in the 12 months since joining, Awoniyi has been in fantastic goalscoring form, and the attacker has caught the eye of Newcastle and West Ham, with Southampton now in the mix.

All three Premier League sides are looking to sign strikers this summer, with West Ham in particular needing to strengthen in the position with Michail Antonio the club’s only natural player in the position.

And Awoniyi could be perfect for either Newcastle, Southampton or West Ham, with Union open to selling their star attacker for €30m (£25m) this summer, a deal which could financially please either of the Premier League sides in the transfer window.

With Southampton now in the race for Awoniyi, this summer is now set to see a three-way battle for the Nigerian’s signature, with Newcastle and West Ham no doubt eager to add the exciting striker to their ranks for next season.

Indeed, this summer is shaping up to be as exciting as last year, and for Newcastle, Southampton and West Ham, signing Awoniyi would be a huge coup for either side as we approach the new season.
