Roma boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly unwilling to meet Jordan Veretout’s £57,000-a-week wage demands, according to Per Sempre Calcio. Newcastle and Tottenham were linked with the French midfielder in January.
Veretout, 28, has been a revelation since joining Roma in the summer of 2019 initially on loan from Fiorentina – already clocking up a huge 110 appearances for the Serie A side. He has had a hand in 36 goals since.
Such form has even seen the ex-Villa midfielder play five times for France – and it has attracted interest from the Premier League, where he might feel he has unfinished business after a tricky spell with the Midlands club.
CalcioMercato reported in January that both Newcastle and Tottenham were considering moves for the midfielder – but nothing materialised. However, his future is in now in doubt, amid the latest claims.
It is believed that Veretout wants £57,000 a week at Roma to extend his contract, hardly a huge pay out given his form. But it appears that Roma and Mourinho do not want to reach that figure.
Veretout future in doubt: Newcastle or Tottenham?
Tottenham have just brought in Rodrigo Bentancur from Fabio Paratici’s old side Juventus – and now seem well-stocked in the middle of the park. Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg remain key to his Spurs side.
Newcastle, meanwhile, brought in Bruno Guimaraes but there is a real lack of quality other than Bruno and Jonjo Shelvey. Isaac Hayden has been left out of the side – due to injury. The Toon could really do with Veretout.
