Daryl Murphy has been linked with a move from Newcastle directly to Sunderland. Fans of both sides have their say.

Sunderland have been linked with a surprise move to bring Daryl Murphy back to the club from fierce rivals Newcastle United, according to the Sunderland Echo.

Murphy has been told by Magpies manager Rafa Benitez that he can leave St James’ Park this summer following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

The Black Cats, meanwhile, are rebuilding their squad after relegation to the Championship and new boss Simon Grayson is targeting recruitment in attack in particular.

With finances limited, they would favour a short-term deal for Murphy – who spent five years at the Stadium of Light between 2005 and 2010 – but also face competition from Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Transfer directly between the Tyne/Wear rivals are rare and fans from the two clubs have reacted in different ways to these latest rumours, with the Sunderland faithful seeming to generally favour the move.

However, Newcastle supporters are less enthused.
