Sunderland saw manager David Moyes resign on Monday evening – and fan celebrations were quickly put to an end by rumours linking Alan Pardew with the post.

The Black Cats had long been relegated before Sunday’s 5-1 defeat away at Premier League champions Chelsea, but the game also proved to be David Moyes’ final match in charge of the club.

Moyes handed in his resignation on Monday evening, bringing his torrid reign as Black Cats boss to an end, less than a year after he was named as Sam Allardyce’s replacement.

Now heading back down to the Championship, Sunderland need to find a manager who can attempt to mastermind a return to the Premier League, but fans may not be too happy with the main name being linked.

ESPN report that Alan Pardew is in contention for the job, as the 55-year-old looks to get back into football having been sacked by Crystal Palace back in December.

Pardew started well at Palace before faltering disastrously in the latter stages of his reign, as has often been the case in his managerial career – but it’s not his time at Palace that would be the main issue for Sunderland fans.

Pardew spent four years in charge of Sunderland’s bitter rivals Newcastle, and he was one of their most unpopular managers in recent memory, with fans against him throughout his stint as boss, even celebrating his 2015 exit.

Now, Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to suggest that they would rather have anybody else as their manager than Pardew, claiming that they would return their season tickets if he is appointed.

Newcastle fans found the funny side though, suggesting that Pardew getting the job at the Stadium of Light would cap off a perfect 2017 so far, which has seen the Magpies win promotion whilst Sunderland suffer relegation.
