Reported Newcastle United and Leeds United target Josh Brownhill has put pen to paper on a new contract with high-flying Championship club Bristol City, ending any chance of interested clubs landing the midfielder.

Website TeamTalk claimed Leeds and Newcastle were just two sides interested in the 21-year-old, along with Derby County, Bournemouth, Burnley and Leicester City ahead of the January transfer window.

Brownhill was a part of Lee Johnson’s side that earned a late winner against Manchester United in the last eight of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, coming off in the 74th minute with score at 1-1 before Korey Smith scored in injury time.

But Lee Johnson’s Robins put those rumours to bed, as Bristol City posted on their Twitter account new of Brownhill extending his contract until the summer of 2020, with his previous deal expiring in six months.

Bristol City’s number eight has had a hand in five goals for the Robins in 21 Championship appearances from central midfield, scoring three against Brentford, Ipswich Town and Hull City as well as providing two assists.

He will now remain a Bristol City player as he continues to shine in Johnson’s side, and is likely to feature in the Robins’ clash against QPR at Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon.
