Paul Merson suggested on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News last Saturday afternoon (1:11pm, December 9, 2017) that Newcastle United and Everton could be looking at Southampton forward Charlie Austin in the January transfer window.

While explaining that Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino needs to play Austin regularly, the former Arsenal attacking midfielder said: “He is one of them. People will be looking at him and thinking, ‘Wait a minute. Charlie Austin doesn’t play too often for Southampton. He won’t be too happy’. Teams like Newcastle, teams like that. Even Everton.”

Austin has had injury issues during his time at Southampton so far, but the Englishman is scoring goals regularly now that he is fully fit and back in the starting lineup.

The 28-year-old former Queens Park Rangers forward has scored five goals in three Premier League starts for Southampton so far this season.

During the 2016-17 campaign, the English forward scored six goals in 11 league starts for the Saints.

Austin knows the Premier League inside out and is a proven goalscorer, and both Newcastle and Everton should at least look into the possibility of signing him in the January transfer window.

Southampton paid QPR a transfer fee of £4 million in January 2016 in order to secure the services of Austin, as reported by The Guardian.
