Newcastle and Arsenal are both in the market for a new winger this summer, and in an ideal world, one of the two clubs would be signing Moussa Diaby.
The Frenchman was Newcastle’s top target earlier this summer, while Arsenal have also been strongly linked.
However, sadly, Bayer Leverkusen have been batting off any interest in Diaby this summer.
Indeed, the Bundesliga club have been desperate to keep their group of players together after a positive 2021/22 season and the squad had bought into the idea.
Dean Jones summed up the situation on The Done Deal Show a few weeks ago.
“Moussa Diaby was a name that cropped up, but Bayer Leverkusen just don’t want to lose him. Newcastle have been knocking on this door for two months now and it wasn’t a case of money at this point, Leverkusen are so desperate to keep this group together for this season and pretty much the entire team is up for it and they’re going to give it a crack together. I think Diaby is almost ungettable,” Jones said.
Diaby was viewed as ungettable as the Bayer Leverkusen squad were ready to have a crack at taking down Bayern Munich this season, but just three weeks into the campaign, that now looks impossible.
Indeed, three games into the new season Leverkusen have zero points on the board, losing to the likes of Augsburg and Hoffenheim.
Leverkusen’s squad were ready to stick together to have a go at the title, but after this awful start, perhaps they’re starting to rethink their situations.
Diaby is still a wanted man, and if he’s come to the conclusion that a title push is out of the question this season, he may decide to pursue a move between now and the end of the transfer window.
The 23-year-old may no longer be as ‘ungettable’ as Jones suggested.
