Newcastle United have reached a £12m transfer fee for the signing of Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier.
According to Sky Sports News, the Magpies have struck a deal with the reigning La Liga champions to sign the England international this month.
As per the report, personal terms are not thought to be a problem, and Trippier will now travel to the northeast to complete a medical ahead of his move to Newcastle.
The 31-year-old right-back will become the first player signed under Newcastle’s PIF regime, with defence a key area that Eddie Howe is eager to strengthen this month in the transfer market.
As well as the backline, the midfield and central attack could see new additions for Newcastle. Callum Wilson is expected to miss most of the season after suffering a calf injury against Manchester United.
Indeed, Trippier’s arrival marks a new era for Newcastle. And whilst the defender alone won’t be enough to solve the club’s problems, it does indicate that the Toon have the pulling power to sign some big names this month.
Trippier signing a bright start for Newcastle’s January spending

A finalist at Euro 2020 with England, Trippier is a great addition to Newcastle’s squad and should be used as an example for what type of players the Magpies should be looking to sign in January.
The defender was a favourite amongst Atletico supporters last season in their title-winning campaign, and Newcastle fans will no doubt be excited to see what Trippier can bring to the fullback position.
