Sean Longstaff, reportedly on the radar of Celtic, has signed a new contract with Newcastle United.

Back in September, The Chronicle claimed of Celtic’s interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

It was reported that Brendan Rodgers’s side had watched the 21-year-old midfielder in action for the Newcastle Under-23 side against their Southampton counterparts.

Longstaff has progressed well for the Newcastle Under-23 team this season, and the midfielder has been handed a new contract by the Magpies.

As announced on Newcastle’s official website, the midfielder has signed a new four-year contract with the club and will stay at the Magpies until 2022.

The development means that Celtic are unlikely to be able to sign Longstaff from Newcastle in the January transfer window and may have to wait until next summer to make their move.

Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff arrives for the Premier League Match between Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth at St.James' Park on November 10, 2018, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Newcastle first-team stalwart Jamaal Lascelles has given his take on the young midfielder getting a new deal from the club on Twitter, saying that it is “deserved”.

Perhaps Longstaff will make an appearance in the Premier League for Newcastle sometime this season, as the 21-year-old midfielder certainly has the potential and the talent.
