Florian Lejeune looks set to miss a large portion of Newcastle United’s season due to a knee injury.

It may be a while before Newcastle fans get to see Florian Lejeune back out on the pitch for the Magpies again, but the centre-back has given the supporters something to smile about by posting an update on his injury on Twitter.

Lejeune recently sustained a cruciate ligament injury in his knee, which the Chronicle recently reported is likely to keep him out for a long period. The injury has prompted Rafa Benitez to search for another new centre-back in the final hours of the transfer window also.

Newcastle have endured a difficult and frustrating window, with Benitez seemingly unable to loosen the purse strings and look at anything other than potential bargain signings.

There appears to be little wrong with the business that Benitez has done, but it would undoubtedly make a huge difference to the squad and mood around St James’ Park if Mike Ashley gave the green light for the Magpies to go out and smash the club record on a marquee signing.

It will not make a huge difference to Benitez for this window, but Lejeune has given the Spaniard something to smile about with a positive update on his injury.

The centre-back – who signed last summer for £8.7 million, as reported by BBC Sport – took to social media to suggest that surgery on his knee had been a success.

Here is what Lejeune posted…

It is good news that the defender’s recovery is set to start on the right path. The Frenchman enjoyed a very encouraging first season with the Magpies, and having him back as quickly as possible will certainly be a boost for Benitez – especially if his hands remain largely tied in the transfer market.
