Steve Stone feels Dan Burn was ‘really positive’ by deciding to shoot as Newcastle United beat Leicester City 2-0. The defender scored his first goal for the Toon in the Carabao Cup.

Burn broke the deadlock at St James’ Park on Tuesday night to put the Magpies in front on the hour mark. He latched onto Joelinton’s pass and waltzed through two Foxes defenders before firing the ball home into the bottom corner of Danny Ward’s net to secure the lead.

Joelinton then turned from creator to goalscorer to double Newcastle’s advantage against Leicester on 72 minutes. The Toon will now feature in the semi-final draw this Wednesday night. They have not contested the final four of the competition since the 1975/76 season.

Burn was enjoying his 37th appearance for Newcastle against Leicester in the Carabao Cup before scoring his first Magpies goal. Eddie Howe bought the 6 ft 6 enforcer from Brighton & Hove Albion last January for £13m. Burn signed a £52k-a-week contract through to 2024.

His move to Tyneside was a long-time coming for the 30-year-old. The Sussex Express cites Burn as having trials with Newcastle as a youth before rejecting the Toon to join Fulham in 2011 from Darlington. But as a lifelong Toon supporter, he eventually moved to St James’.

Burn impressed Stone with his goal for Newcastle vs Leicester in the Carabao Cup

Burn had rarely scored goals throughout the Newcastle defender’s career before he netted against Leicester in the Carabao Cup. The centre-cum-left-back only hit home twice over 69 games with Fulham then seven in 111 for Wigan Athletic and twice over 85 with Brighton.

Five of the towering defender’s haul with the Latics also came during the 2017/18 League One campaign. While each of his efforts for the Seagulls came in the Premier League. The Blyth-born brute has only scored twice over his 117 career top-flight appearances to date.

But Burn’s decision-making impressed Stone after opting to shoot to help Newcastle beat Leicester in the Carabao Cup. The former England midfielder admired his courage to shoot and produce a finish that was out of Ward’s reach on a night the Foxes goalkeeper shone.

“If you go on chances, then Newcastle deserve to be in front,” Stone said on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra. “Leicester got caught in possession and Newcastle just pounced on them.

“It’s some great one-touch play. Dan Burn is really positive, pulls it onto his right foot and, for the first time in the match, Danny Ward can’t get anywhere near it.”
