According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are still hopeful of bringing Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey to the club during this month’s transfer window.

The Hammers continue to make progress under David Moyes after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat of Huddersfield Town, but are still in the market for new signings this month.

West Ham are searching for at least one new central midfielder to compete with Mark Noble, Pedro Obiang and Cheikhou Kouyate, and they are looking both domestically and on the continent for potential targets.

The Daily Mail recently noted that West Ham are still hopeful of securing a deal for Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, in a move which may well be appealing to the 26-year-old.

Shelvey has spent the last two years with Newcastle, but returning to London – having been born in Romford – should be attractive, especially given his ties to West Ham.

Not only did Shelvey spend two years in the West Ham youth ranks, but he also admitted to Sky Sports’ EFL Weekly Podcast earlier this year that he is a West Ham fan having grown up supporting the club.

Should West Ham manage to tempt Newcastle into a deal, then Shelvey would surely jump at the chance to join his boyhood club, especially given his up-and-down campaign for Newcastle this season.

Questions over his temperament linger, but Shelvey would give West Ham a playmaker with a superb passing range and a real desire to succeed for the club he loves, making him a fascinating target for Moyes and co this month.
