Ian Wright lauded Martin Odegaard’s performance and stated that he is hitting ‘Cesc Fabregas levels’ after Arsenal secured a much-needed 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The Arsenal captain opened the scoring with a stunning long-range finish, with Wright critical of Newcastle midfielder Joelinton for not closing his man down.

That was Martin Odegaard’s 15th Premier League goal of the season – and yet another goal-of-the-season contender, after his outstanding brace against Chelsea, not forgetting that opening strike at Tottenham.

There haven’t been many high-quality performers that have sat in the middle of the park for Arsenal since Cesc Fabregas donned the club’s colours.

Perhaps Mesut Ozil, albeit it didn’t end well, but certainly Santi Cazorla can put themselves in that boat.

Well, now they have a 23-year-old making the ball talk and telling the world that Arsenal’s Premier League title charge isn’t over, with Wright calling him ‘brilliant’, as he told Premier League Productions (07/05/23 at 6:40 pm).

“Brilliant, brilliant season,” said Wright. “These are Cesc Fabregas levels and we know how great he was.

“Too much time and too much space for someone who does find that (bottom corner). You can see Joelinton is too late. That going through the legs has caused Nick Pope all sorts of problems.

“Joelinton should have already been on his way out there, so by the time this gets to Odegaard, or you diswayed him from passing to Odegaard.”

ODEGAARD KEEPS UP ARSENAL’S FIGHT

The gap between Arsenal and Premier League leaders, Manchester City, who have a game in hand, is now one point.

Yes, the Gunners have shot themselves in the foot during the past six weeks, but they are only in control of the here and now, as well as the future.

And, with Odegaard leading the charge, they are still pushing this title race to the last day of the season.
