Despite being a nation famed for their prowess on the Rugby field, New Zealand have had a surprising amount of decent football players over the years, with many of them gracing English football.

Despite many being more recognisable in the lower divisions, some of the Kiwi’s best ever players have in fact played in the Premier League, with some picking up over 200 appearances in the Premier League.

Taking a look at some of the famous New Zealand footballers that you might not have even been aware were Kiwi’s, HITC Sport has put together a list of the top three to ever play in English football. But did we miss anyone out? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

1. Ryan Nelsen

After making 172 appearances for Blackburn Rovers, central defender Ryan Nelsen was somewhat of a Premier League legend during his playing career. The tough-tackling, no-nonsense defender helped keep Blackburn in the top flight for many years, and eventually earned himself a move to Tottenham Hotspur under Harry Redknapp. Despite only making five appearances for the club, Nelsen also played with his heart on his sleeve, and has more recently been involved in football management with Toronto FC.

2. Winston Reid

Originally representing Denmark at youth international level, West Ham United defender Winston Reid is now the captain of the New Zealand national side, and is arguably one of the best, if not the best, player to represent the Kiwis. Joining West Ham United from FC Midtjylland in 2010, Winston Reid has become one of the Hammers best and most consistent defenders, and still has a bright future ahead of him.

3. Chris Wood

Starting his career at in Waikato, a small side based in Hamilton, New Zealand, Chris Wood has come a long way in his career. Joining West Bromwich Albion in 2009, the big Kiwi striker has been around the block, scoring sporadically here and there. However, under Garry Monk at Leeds United, Chris Wood appears to have found his home, and has transformed into arguably the most lethal striker in the Championship this season. Scoring 19 goals in 42 appearances for New Zealand, Chris Wood has proved he can do it for club and country. Does he deserve Premier League football now, with or without Leeds United?
