The New York Knicks’ title-clinching win over the San Antonio Spurs became one of the biggest television moments the NBA has seen in a generation.

Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals averaged 24.5 million viewers across ABC and ESPN, with the audience peaking at 33 million during the closing moments.

That audience arrived as New York completed its first championship run since 1973, turning a decisive Finals night into a major national broadcast event.

The Knicks-Spurs series was the most-watched NBA Finals since 1998, making the title-clinching game a landmark moment on court and on television.

The central number was significant because it came at the point the championship was settled. Game 5 did not rely only on build-up or market interest.

The closing stages drew the peak audience of 33 million viewers, which underlined how strongly the contest held attention until the final moments.

New York’s long wait gave the ratings landmark extra weight

The sporting context made the ratings figure more powerful. The Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 to secure their first NBA title in 53 years.

New York won the series 4-1, ending one of the league’s most recognisable championship droughts with a controlled Finals victory.

Jalen Brunson was named Finals MVP, giving the series an individual headline to match the wider team achievement.

The Knicks did not only return to the top of the NBA. They also delivered the Finals’ strongest television audience since Michael Jordan’s final championship run.
