OG Anunoby may be a New York Knicks hero, but his ties to the city go beyond basketball and straight into the heart of Mets fandom.

The Knicks forward has been one of the defining players of the 2026 NBA Finals, and his Game 4 heroics against the San Antonio Spurs only made him more beloved around the city.

Now Mets fans have another reason to claim him as one of their own.

OG Anunoby reveals lifelong Mets fandom

In a post shared by Topps, Anunoby was described as a baseball-card collector and a major Mets fan dating back to childhood.

“He listed Carlos Delgado as one of his favorites to watch… He also liked José Reyes, Pedro Martínez, and, essentially, the entire Mets roster of the late 2000s.”

That is a very specific kind of Mets fandom. Delgado, Reyes, and Martínez were central figures of the 2000s era, when the Mets had star power, heartbreak, and a roster that stuck with a generation of fans.

It also gives Anunoby a natural baseball connection beyond simply playing for a New York team. He grew up collecting cards, followed the sport closely, and now has Topps amplifying his story during the biggest week of his basketball career.

Jose Reyes invites OG Anunoby to Citi Field

Reyes noticed the story and responded with a public invite of his own, writing on X: “Hey @OG_Anunoby, Happy for your success. Proud that you’re a Mets fan. The Mets and I would love to invite you to Citi Field to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. All the best, Jose Reyes.”

That would be a perfect crossover moment. Anunoby and I would love to invite you to Citi Field to throw out a ceremonial first pitch. All the best, Jose Reyes.”

Anunoby has already produced one of the biggest plays in modern Knicks history, tipping in Jalen Brunson’s miss with 1.2 seconds left to complete a 29-point comeback in Game 4.

If the Knicks finish the job, a Citi Field first pitch would feel less like a promo appearance and more like a citywide celebration.

OG Anunoby has a real Finals MVP case

Anunoby is not just a role player riding a viral moment. Through four Finals games, he is averaging 23.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals while shooting 58 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three.

His 33-point Game 4, seven made threes, late block on De’Aaron Fox, and game-winning tip-in pushed him to the top of NBA.com’s Finals MVP ladder.

Jalen Brunson still has a major case because of his scoring and leadership, but Anunoby’s two-way impact has become impossible to ignore.

The Mets may have found the perfect guest for Citi Field. If Anunoby walks in with a Finals MVP trophy, Queens might treat him like he has been part of the franchise all along.
