Lando Norris’ historic F1 world title should have earned him royal recognition. Instead, Britain’s top motorsport honour went to an executive, not the driver who delivered their latest global triumph.
Stuart Pringle, Silverstone’s CEO, has been awarded an OBE in the 2026 New Year Honours List for services to motorsport. He has overseen record crowds and a new deal securing the British Grand Prix until 2034. Meanwhile, Lando Norris, who claimed Britain’s first F1 title since 2020, was left off the list entirely.
Every British F1 champion from Damon Hill to Lewis Hamilton received honours soon after their first title. Hill was recognised in 1996, Hamilton in 2008, and Button in 2009.
Norris’ absence marks the first time in decades that a homegrown world champion has not been recognised by the Crown. The decision signals a clear break from how British sporting excellence has traditionally been celebrated.
Recognition shifts from performance to management
The latest Honours List celebrates administrators and team builders rather than active athletes. Silverstone’s Pringle joins a list of recognised sporting leaders, while figures like Hamilton and Jenson Button once received honours for their achievements on track.
The shift suggests the system now prioritises sustained service and administration over peak sporting performance.
The snub reflects a wider trend in how Formula 1 is perceived. It has become a commercial asset and cultural brand rather than a purely competitive sport. The championship’s executives and promoters are being rewarded, while its drivers are fading from public recognition.
That change implies Britain’s connection to its racing heroes is weakening, even as its circuits and sponsors thrive.
Britain’s next champion will deserve more than applause. If Formula 1’s global relevance is to mean anything at home, its drivers should still be recognised as national icons, not just entertainers at corporate events.
