The Copa American star was a vital part of Zenit’s Russian Premier League triumph, and will now be bringing that form to the Hawthorns.
New West Brom signing Salomon Rondon boasted a scoring record last season at Zenit St Petersburg that would be comparable to the Premier League’s most prolific scorers.
Rondon scored 13 goals for Zenit Saint Petersburg last season in just 26 appearances, a plucky one in two ration that is certainly nothing to be sniffed at. He was joint second top scorer in the division behind teammate Hulk, who had just two more, but looking a little closer at that record makes for even better reading for Baggies fans, and hints that they have a real star on their hands in the Venezuelan international.
Because the forward started just 17 of those league games, registering 1515 minutes of total football.
Thats a record of a goal every 117 minutes.
Comparing that ratio to the Premier League’s best from last season, and there are only three players who can better the former Malaga man.
| Position | Team | Minutes Played per Goal | Goals | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sergio Agüero | FW | Man City | 97.65 | 26 | 33 | 2539 |
| Diego Costa | FW | Chelsea | 104.1 | 20 | 26 | 2082 |
| Papiss Demba Cissé | FW | Newcastle | 104.73 | 11 | 22 | 1152 |
| Salomon Rondon | FW | Zenit | 116.54 | 13 | 26 | 1551 |
| Harry Kane | FW | Tottenham | 122.91 | 21 | 34 | 2581 |
Only star strikers at Manchester City and Chelsea, Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa beat that record having scored more goals than Rondon, while Newcastle United forward Papiss Cisse also had a phenomenal goal ratio, but aside from those three players, nobody could match Rondon’s number of goals to minutes played, with Tottenham favourite Harry Kane short in fourth place in the Premier League.
Of course, there will be plenty of people who rightly point out that the Russian Premier League is a much weaker division than the English top flight, but considering Rondon’s limited starts, it is certainly proof for the West Brom faithful that they are getting a player capable of providing an outstanding number of goals whether he features from the start or from the bench.
