Coleman knows the scale of the challenge that his new Sunderland side face this evening, when they travel to Villa Park to take on the claret and blues.

Coleman will take charge of the Black Cats for the first time this evening, and the former Wales manager has already had to curb expectations.

He said: “We can’t ask for too much. Villa are doing very well, top six and I expect them to succeed this season because Brucie is doing a good job there.”

Villa were made favourites for promotion last term, but they failed to live up to expectations.

Bruce’s side also made a slow start this time around, but have found their feet now, and have racked up seven victories in their last 11 matches.

Sunderland, meanwhile, have won just once in the Championship all season and currently sit at the bottom of the second tier standings.
