According to The Times, the British government will not stop the Premier League from approving Newcastle United’s sale to Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).
The report has claimed that a letter from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to a campaign group calling for the sale to be blocked has stated that the government has no role in the takeover process.
The report has further added that the government has made supportive noises about the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle despite complaints against it.
Positive for Newcastle United?
This new report in The Times seems to claim that the British government will not have any say whatsoever in the Premier League’s directors’ and owners’ test.
This means that it is up to the Premier League to make a decision on whether or not PIF should be able to buy the Magpies.
One obstacle appears to have been removed in the proposed takeover, and perhaps a decision will be made soon.
It has been taking weeks for the Premier League to decide whether or not they should give the go-ahead to the takeover, and Newcastle fans must want it to be sorted out, one way or the other.
