Gareth McAuley has been paying attention to Steven Gerrard’s Rangers ahead of his move to Ibrox.
Rangers made their 15th and potentially final signing of the summer yesterday when they clinched a move to sign Gareth McAuley.
The Northern Ireland international wants to play and does not just want to be a back up, but he also admits he is impressed by Rangers’ current first choice pairing.
Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson have stood out since joining in the summer and have forged an effective partnership.
McAuley told Rangers’ official website he wants to help the duo out, and complimented their efforts so far.
He said: “Especially the first two lads – I have been watching the games and they are good players who have been doing really well and the manager is really pleased with them as well.
“It is up to me to challenge them and to try and get in the team, but also to help develop them as well as they are the future of the club and the means to moving forward as well.
“They are young boys and anything I can help them with, I will certainly do that.”
McAuley has huge experience of playing in England in the Premier League and wants to make an impact in Scotland after joining the club he supported as a youngster.
His arrival gives Rangers the option to rotate their centre-backs, along with fellow new addition Joe Worrall.
Rangers have greater flexibility to play with three at the back, meaning McAuley can impart his wisdom to Goldson and Katic while out on the pitch alongside them.
