Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye have formed a formidable partnership. How far can they take the club?

Everton FC now possess a solid spine, a feature that they lacked severely under Roberto Martinez. The club now have five clean sheets in 2017 and the most points this calendar year.

And they made short work of Sunderland at the weekend in a 2-0 win.

David Moyes’s return to Goodison Park with the Black Cats did not prove particularly challenging for the hosts.

It was a typical performance from the Toffee’s in many aspects: Lukaku scored, another clean sheet was kept and the home side dominated possession.

However, it was the partnership of Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye who gave the impression that something special is being built at Goodison Park.

Gueye has not only been Everton’s best signing, but also their best player this season.

The Senegalese international scored his first goal for Everton; something that manager Ronald Koeman was keen to add to his game.

However, the man of the match was Morgan Schneiderlin, who completed a central midfield trio with Tom Davies.

Manager Ronald Koeman was quick to praise this partnership in the post match games. He told Sky Sports: ”You saw the quality of Morgan Schneiderlin today and Gana (Gueye) is back from the Africa Cup of Nations with good fitness and showing a high level.”

So, what is a realistic aim for Ronald Koeman’s side this season?

Everton travel to Tottenham this Sunday in a massive game, and the two new midfield arrivals are surely going to be crucial to achieving a positive result.

Surely a win at White Hart Lane would not only put pressure on struggling Merseyside rivals Liverpool but also increase Everton’s push for Champions League football.
