Middlesbrough completed the signing of Rudy Gestede from Aston Villa yesterday.

New Middlesbrough signing Rudy Gestede has admitted that it was an easy decision to leave Aston Villa, as quoted by the club’s official website.

The Benin international failed to establish himself during his time at Villa Park, and has now been given a fantastic opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League with Boro.

And the 28-year-old spoke to MFC.co.uk, following the completion of his £6 million switch to the Riverside, sharing how happy he is to be back playing in the top flight:

“It’s always a pleasure to see old teammates. I was in touch with Jordan Rhodes over a few texts and I’m happy to see Adama Traore and Brad Guzan as well. When I saw the way Boro play with the manager and the players that were already here, it was an easy decision. I wasn’t playing much at Villa and now I’m back in the Premier League, so it’s a very good move for me.”

The signing does seem to be a risky one from the Teessiders, with Gestede having never proved himself in the Premier League.

He scored just nine goals in 50 league outings for Villa, and with Boro in such dire need of more goalscoring options, the jury is very much out on whether Gestede can provide them with that.

It will be interesting to see if Aitor Karanka pairs the former Villa man with Alvaro Negredo as part of a 4-4-2, in an attempt to provide his side with more of an attacking edge.

And if Gestede can score the goals that ensures Boro’s Premier League survival, it will prove to be £6 million very well spent.
