Gideon Mensah hasn’t played a game for Austrian Bundesliga champions Red Bull Salzburg – but is he on his way to the Scottish Premiership?

It’s all well and good snapping up little known youngsters in the hope that they will follow in the footsteps of Virgil Van Dijk, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Dembele. But what is wrong with signing proven, established footballers capable of immediately improving the starting XI?
That is the question on every Celtic fans’ lips with The Scottish Sun reporting that manager Neil Lennon is keen to sign, on loan of course, a 21-year-old who has never played for his parent club.
Red Bull Salzburg flyer Gideon Mensah is certainly highly rated and, according to Ghana Soccernet, he was linked with a stunning move to La Liga champions Barcelona after shining in a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid.

But with Celtic needing to replace the departed Kieran Tierney, the best left-back in Scotland and one of the best in the whole of Europe, is an unproven youngster like Mensah really up to the task?
Suggestions that he could arrive on loan rather than a permanent deal haven’t gone down well either with a fanbase growing increasingly frustrated with a lack of ambition in the transfer market.
