The new Leeds United boss has spoken at a press conference today.
Leeds United have today unveiled Garry Monk as their new manager. The former Swansea boss takes over from Steve Evans at Elland Road on an initial 12-month deal.
He underwent his first press conference as Leeds United boss earlier today, and spoke about many different aspects of his role at the club.
As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Monk made it clear that there had been tentative discussions regarding transfer targets and that he was happy working in an environment where he did not have the final say on transfer signings:
“We have discussed things that need to be done and I’m sure that will come again in the coming weeks.
“I have worked in structure, where numerous people involved in bringing players to club. I am fine with that.”
However, he made it clear that team selection was 100 per cent his domain:
“Of course. That was never in question.”
Steve Evans, in his departure this week, seemed to suggest to Sky Sports that his transfer targets were not met by enthusiasm by Massimo Cellino – stating:
“One thing that became obvious to me was that the names I had in mind at the end of last season, that would be needed to take this great club forward, were perhaps not being met with the appreciation or the thought process I put behind them.”
This is one area where the balance has to be finite.
Cellino has good links in Italy and in the past has been instrumental in bringing in some very talented players – such as Mirco Antenucci or Gaetano Berardi. Unfortunately, there has also been some big duds – such as Zan Benedicic, Granddi Ngoyi or Edgar Cani.
But if Monk and Cellino, along with new director of football Niccolo Barratieri, can work together on transfers then hopefully Leeds can be potent in the transfer market.
