Leeds United have added the former Liverpool youngster to their ranks.
As reported by the club’s official website, Leeds United have secured the signing of 20-year-old Spanish midfielder Madger Gomes following his release from Liverpool, and previous comments from the player show just how much he admires an Anfield legend.
Speaking to liverpoolfc.com back in April, the 20-year-old was asked about Steven Gerrard’s return to Liverpool in a coaching role, and he was effusive in his praise.
“When Gerrard speaks to me I listen to everything because you can learn a lot from him,” Gomes said.
“Gerrard is an amazing player and maybe one day I want to do one per cent the same as him but it is very difficult.”
It certainly is, but Leeds fans will be hoping some of that Gerrard magic has rubbed off on their newest signing.
Gomes would not have known just a few short months ago that his future was away from Liverpool, and those comments regarding his Anfield icon could now be bittersweet as he sets his sights on a first-team debut for Leeds.
But despite the disappointment of being released, the youngster will be hoping he can force his way into Thomas Christiansen’s thinking sooner rather than later.
For now Gomes will be training with Leeds’ under-23 side, yet from there anything is possible and the young Spaniard will know every chance to impress his new boss will be vital, even at this early stage of his career.
Gomes was previously on the books at Villarreal, where he made just one appearance for their B team, and he followed that up with 20 outings for Liverpool’s second string prior to his Leeds switch.
