With Spurs set to offer six senior players new contracts, is the club about to break their strict wage cap?
There are mixed feelings about Tottenham Hotspur’s strict wage structure, with some praising chairman Daniel Levy for not overspending while others think the limitations are stopping the club from competing with the very best.
Relegation-threatened Crystal Palace and West Ham United, for example, both pay their biggest earners more than £100,000-a-week.
Yet a new report from the same newspaper could point to the fact that Levy is finally prepared to increase the upper limits of what players can earn at Tottenham.
It says that manager Mauricio Pochettino is in line for a new contract, as are the aforementioned Lloris and Kane, along with Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Heung-min Son and Jan Vertonghen.
Could this mean that just as the club are preparing to move into a brand new White Hart Lane and are set for a third successive season of Champions League qualification, they can also make themselves an even more attractive prospect with higher earning potential?
With a wage cap in place, teams are around them will always be able to eclipse Spurs in terms of wages, meaning that their star players could very easily walk away for a bigger payday. If Tottenham are to continue competing near the top of the Premier League, then they must break this structure to ensure their finest players remain at the club.
News of new contracts could be an indication that Levy has realised this.
