Could Everton’s Joel Robles solve the goalkeeper problem that Newcastle currently have?
Rafael Benitez, manager of Newcastle United, looks on prior to the Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion.
Rafa Benitez will be counting down the days until the January transfer window opens as he looks to improve his Newcastle United squad.
Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (R) shoots but fails to score past Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow during the English Premier League football match.
As the Chronicle reports, Benitez wanted to bring in a stopper over the summer, but despite moving on Tim Krul and Matz Sels no one new came in to replace them.
Rob Elliot therefore started the season for Newcastle between the sticks, but recently has been dropped for Karl Darlow – who played the majority of their promotion-winning campaign in the Championship last season.
As it looks as if Benitez will have limited money to spend on incoming signings the 57-year-old may have to target less high profile ‘keepers and therefore Joel Robles could be the ideal solution.
Joel Robles of Everton reacts during the UEFA Europa League group E match against Atalanta.
The Everton star has played just one first team match for the Toffees this season – a 5-1 Europa League defeat to Atalanta – having fallen behind Jordan Pickford and Maarten Stekelenburg in the pecking order.
Therefore the Merseysiders may be open to allowing Robles to leave and with Benitez already having five Spaniards in his ranks – and being Spanish himself – the 27-year-old may well be tempted by the switch to St James’ Park to link up with his fellow countrymen.
