Robert Kraft has confirmed that NFL owners are backing a global expansion plan that could frustrate both fans and players.

Kraft admitted the initiative from the NFL is designed to fuel growth but may not be popular with everyone.

Speaking in an interview with 98. 5 – The Sports Hub, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft shared some insight into discussions about expanding the NFL.
He revealed that the season could be expanded to 18 regular-season games, which will involve each NFL team playing at least one overseas game.
“Every team will go to 18 [regular season games] and two [preseason games],” Kraft said. “Every team, every year, will play one game overseas. We’re going to push like the dickens to make international more important with us.”
Kraft said the league’s international expansion will also help “keep labor happy” by increasing the salary cap through new global revenue streams.
The move is part of a broader effort to keep the NFL financially strong and globally relevant in the coming decades.
18-game season faces union approval hurdle
Robert Kraft acknowledged that the proposed 18-game format cannot move forward without approval from the NFL Players Association.
The current collective bargaining agreement runs through 2030, meaning both sides will need to negotiate new terms before any expansion happens.
The international games in particular could be a sticking point for players, as the extensive travel and weather conditions often create a difficult environment for teams.
While the plan may divide opinion among players and fans, Kraft believes the NFL must focus on long-term growth. “We have to plan for where this league will be 20 years from now,” he said.
