Gary Rowett is set to take on Nottingham Forest in his first match in charge of Derby County this weekend.

Gary Rowett’s comments to Sky Sports about turning down Nottingham Forest, make particularly interesting reading now that he has taken over at Derby County.

Rowett was one of Forest’s first choices to take over from Philippe Montanier, but he decided against accepting a job at the City Ground last month.

The former Birmingham City boss felt that the structure of Forest was not correct to get the promoted.

He said: ”The thing with Forest is, and I can be honest and open, with any job you look at the structure of the club.

“You look at where you think that club is at the minute and can you honestly go in and give that your best shot?

“If the structure was to change and I felt there was more support for the manager long term and a long-term plan for where they want to be – because I want to get to the Premier League with a club or at least feel like there is that ambition – then of course Nottingham Forest is an amazing club with great history.

“It would be a job that most managers, along with myself, would be interested in.”

Rowett has now decided that Derby offers him a better chance to guide a side to the Premier League.

Derby, themselves, have hardly been stable recently – with their manager turnover high.

However, Rowett clearly feels that Derby have a plan in place to earn promotion.

Forest, meanwhile, have moved for Mark Warburton as they battle against the drop.

Warburton has penned a two-and-a-half year deal at Forest, with the pressure on him to make an immediate impact.

Warburton’s first match in charge of Forest comes at the weekend, when they take on Rowett’s Derby side in what should be a brilliant East Midlands derby.
