Jamaal Lascelles told the Getting Messi Podcast that his Newcastle United teammate Jonjo Shelvey is ‘hands down’ the best technical player he has played with.

The centre-back stated that he has ‘never seen anything like it’ and he couldn’t put a finger on why he doesn’t play for England.

During his career, Shelvey has played for the likes of Liverpool and Swansea, but during these past few years, he has found his home at St James’ Park.

Lascelles was asked who is the best technical player he has played with and he didn’t hesitate to put Shelvey’s name forward.

“Hands down Jonjo Shelvey,” said Lascelles. “Honestly, I have never seen anything like it.

“His passing of the ball. His long pings. His short passes. Technically, he is definitely the best player I have played with.

“I don’t think he’s underrated because everyone knows his quality. He has been called up in the past [for England]. But the reasons why not now, I am not sure.

“I think a lot might have to do with what team you are at, maybe. Well, I don’t know. There are lads in the England team now that are at teams similar to us. I am not too sure, to be honest. Jonjo is technically one of the best passes of the ball in the Prem.”

Shelvey’s ability to pass the ball at whatever range, angle and speed is a quality in his game worthy of showcasing at the highest level.

That was a big reason as to why Liverpool secured his services in 2010, but something didn’t click for the Charlton academy product.

In recent seasons, Shelvey has played under defensive-minded tactics, which don’t suit his game because he also has a long-range shot in his locker, which he has showcased less frequently during these past few seasons.
