Yesterday was a sombre day for the world of football as Sergio Aguero officially announced his retirement from the game at just 33-years-old.

In a press conference in Barcelona, the Argentina striker and Manchester City legend confirmed that he will be hanging up his boots after an illustrious career at the pinnacle of the sport.

Aguero has been forced into retirement following a cardiac problem that arose in a recent La Liga match with FC Barcelona. And to say the attacker’s farewell event was emotional would be an understatement.

City manager Pep Guardiola was among a small crowd watching Aguero make the announcement next to the Camp Nou pitch, with the striker likely to go down as one of the best in the modern era following his retirement from football.

In total, Aguero scored 427 goals in 786 games for club and country as the Argentine became the highest goalscorer in City’s history as well as the highest-scoring foreign player in the Premier League, overtaking Thierry Henry.

As per BBC Sport, Aguero said about his retirement: “I’m proud of the career I’ve had and am fortunate it is happening to me now rather than before. I don’t know what awaits me in the next life but I know there are a lot of people who love me and want the best for me.”

With the striker the fourth-highest scoring player in Premier League history, the 33-year-old will go down as one of the best to ever grace the English game this century. And City fans on social media were full of emotion.
