As the 2020/21 season kicked off, Arsenal fans were justifiably crowing about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s new contract. Meanwhile, on the other side of north London, fears were growing about whether the arch-pragmatist sitting in the Tottenham dugout would turn Harry Kane into Vincent Janssen.
How times change.
Flash forward to early December and while Aubameyang has failed to score from open play in nine games and more than 800 minutes of Premier League football, Kane has taken his game to a whole new level under Mourinho, adding a Zidane-esque vision to his lethal finishing.
And with Carlos Vinicius impressing in reserve, opening his account with a brace in Thursday’s Europa League thrashing of Ludogorets, Spurs fans could be forgiven for forgetting all about Wout Weghorst – even if he’s in the form of his life in Germany.
“I can be honest, of course I knew there was interest left and right. It was serious with Tottenham, I was a candidate,” the 6ft 5in Dutchman told Kicker recently.
Weghorst has put any disappointment at missing out on a Premier League switch behind him, taking his tally to six goals in his last six games (and eight in 13 overall) with a trademark bullet header in Wolfsburg’s 5-3 Bundesliga triumph over Werder Bremen at the weekend.
A few miles down the road, however, an Arsenal side that suffered a third successive home defeat against Wolves on Sunday night were once again ruing the absence of an in-form centre-forward.

But the comments from Wolfsburg sporting director Jorg Schmadtke yesterday should give Arsenal fans something to hold on to.
“You can never categorically rule out a transfer,” Schmadtke told SportBuzzer when discussing Weghorst’s future at the VFL Arena.
“We have always said if there’s a reasonable offer Wout also considers interesting, we will sit down and discuss it.”
Weghorst wouldn’t come cheap at £32 million (BILD). But for Arsenal, who have only ten goals in ten league games this season, a natural-born goalscorer like the flying Dutchman would be nothing short of priceless.
Furthermore, with Weghorst frustrated at being left out of the recent Netherlands squad, he would jump at the chance to join a more high-profile club with the Euros on the horizon.
