AC Milan would be making a big mistake if they sold Everton target Alessio Romagnoli according to former Rossoneri star Lucas Biglia, who told Gazzetta dello Sport that the defender could play for Manchester City or Juventus.
If Milan can keep a hugely talented squad of players together, then one of Europe’s most youthful and exciting sides will surely be Serie A contenders for years to come.
That, however, is an if the size of Mont Blanc.
Hakan Calhanoglu and Gigi Donnarumma are set to become free agents in July as things stand, while Franck Kessie and Romangoli are out of contract in 2022.
According to Il Milanista, the latter, a former Roma youngster with 12 Italy caps, could be available for a bargain £24 million with Carlo Ancelotti a long-time admirer.
And Biglia believes that Milan should do everything in their power to ensure that Romagnoli, one of the most promising central defenders in the game, commits his long-term future to the seven-time European champions.
“I would never let him go. He is the captain,” explained the Argentina international, who played alongside Romangoli at the San Siro, via Football Italia.
“He would have no problems in finding a new team. Top clubs like Juventus or Manchester City would sign him without thinking twice.”
In a clear sign of how highly Romagnoli is valued in Milan, the Italian giants made him their youngest captain since the legendary Franco Baresi in 1982 three years ago.
“(He is) a real captain,” Paolo Maldini, another former Milan skipper, told Sky last year. “A leader of this team.”
The challenge now falls on Maldini himself – as Milan’s technical director – to tie Romangoli down.
