Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes has refused to rule out selling Jonathan Tah to Leicester City or Fulham before the transfer window slams shut, while speaking in quotes reported by Fussball Transfers.
If Fulham fans were hoping that they had learned their lessons from a disastrous 2018/19 Premier League season, which ended in a 19th-place finish and a tally of 81 in the Goals Against column, Saturday’s opening day thumping at the hands of Arsenal hardly eased those fears.
As Willian and co ripped through Scott Parker’s back line again and again, the Cottagers looked as slack and error-prone as they did in their last spell in the big time.
So signing a Germany international with a handful of Champions League appearances on his CV would represent a major step in the right direction.
The Telegraph reports that Tah is on Fulham’s radar and, while the £33 million-rated giant would not come cheap, Premier League survival is absolutely priceless.
“He’s a player who can improve. I trust him to play a much better role and take a step forward,” Rolfes says of a man who has stagnated after a bright start to his career at Leverkusen.
“Although the general rule is: ‘You can never exclude anything (about a sale)’.”
The Telegraph adds that Leicester are also interested in a commanding centre-half. Tah’s classy, ball-playing style certainly makes him a tailored fit for Brendan Rodgers’ possession-based principles.
But the Foxes are prioritising St Etienne’s Wesley Fofana at present, with Tah merely a back-up option.
