Steven Bergwijn might return to Tottenham Hotspur a different man after the international break.

The rarely-used Spurs winger, who has started one game under Antonio Conte this calendar year, was the hero for his country on Saturday night.

Bergwijn, who joined Tottenham in 2020, scored twice in helping the Netherlands to victory over Denmark in a friendly encounter.

With Christian Eriksen scoring for the Danes, that’s where the headlines went.

But from a Tottenham perspective, Bergwijn’s performance was a very encouraging one.

According to Dutch publication Gelderlander, the 24-year-old picked up an 8/10 performance and he ‘never disappoints’ under Dutch manager Louis van Gaal.

He might disappoint under Van Gaal, but he has under Conte.

There’s a reason why the Italian manager has started him once in a game across any competition for Tottenham since the turn of the year.

Talented as he may be, Bergwijn is also inconsistent and has been under every Lilywhites coach that he’s played under, including Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo before Conte arrived.

However, this brace is a reminder of his talents, because his second of the night was superb, and hopefully he can return to Hotspur Way with a little more confidence.
